Maybe more than a scare

Sometimes, when you have a dog that's been through what Leo's been through, you see little things and think that it's nothing, and sometimes you see little things and KNOW that something is amiss.  This is one of those latter times.

We had both noticed that, over the past week, Leo has been shaking his head like there's something in his ear.  His ears are clear, so that's good.  Yesterday, I was at the store and I noticed a bit of swelling on the right hand side near the corner of his jaw.  Not the "oh my goodness it looks like he swallowed a tennis ball" swelling of lymphoma, but certainly something that was not right.  And, it was a bit sore - are least Leo wasn't happy with us touching it.  He'd also gotten a little... picky, with food.  He wasn't not eating, but the gusto of the post-Pepcid period was missing.  I called and made another appointment.

This time, it wasn't an all clear.  In fact, I am terribly upset with what we heard at the vet.  Dr. C saw him and agreed that something in his neck/throat wasn't right, and had an internist have a look with the sonogram.  His lymph nodes aren't swollen, at least in the way that they would be with lymphoma, but they aren't exactly normal.  His esophagus, tonsils, and trachea (the whole thing) is enlarged, and that could be Very Bad.

The possibilities that Dr. C went through with us are not promising - all of them had the words "very aggressive" attached, which is not something you like to hear.

So, I wait and see what the surgeon has to say.  I certainly hope that he has some kind of good news - and whether that means it's nothing to be concerned about, nothing that's dangerous or untreatable, or something that's at least treatable.
