Best day ever (Part 2400)

The great thing about dogs is that they live for right now.  I mean, RIGHT NOW (i just spent way too much time looking for this Far Side cartoon of a bunch of dogs in a lifeboat with a huge bag of food, voting "Who says we should eat all of the food now", and the caption about why dogs don't survive shipwrecks.  Couldn't find it.  Hilarious. Trust me.)  Leo doesn't really know he's sick - i think he knows he didn't feel well (ok, more time on the couch) and now feels better (ok, let's get off the couch!).
However, he's not had a whole lot of spring in his step the last little while.  The chemo has been taking it's toll on him (and us) and he seemed a lot lower energy.  Perhaps NOT going to Colorado is a good thing, then right?  And then we had the Best Day Ever  - which for dogs is almost every day, but still, I think this one was pretty good.  We went to lovely Prospect Park for a hike, which is pretty funny to say, but it's very possible - and it's also very nice, because there aren't the over-abundance of ticks in Prospect Park like there are everywhere else around the city.  So, taking advantage of the relatively low number of biting creatures and the low temperatures, we went off to PP, me, Luna and Leo.  And let me tell you - that Leo was on it.  I haven't seen him with that much energy in over  a year.  He was constantly pulling, constantly on the go, picking up the pace, making sure we were moving.  The only times he stopped were to mark every 3rd tree for the first half hour, and to try and roll in horse manure (seriously, he LOVES it).
Luna was a champ, and did her best to keep up.  But after 2 hours, she'd had it.  Leo, on the other hand, was just getting warmed up.  He wanted to keep going, and had even more energy on his later night walk, running down the block, running around the park, acting like he wasn't chemo-Leo but like  border collie Leo. It was great to see.  Having a week off from the chemo, especially this last one, plus a novel location plus the cool temperatures really did a number on his get-up-and-go.
And I felt like the World's Worst Daddy for not taking him to PP every weekend.  We'll be changing that, now that I've discovered some new places to go there (the horse trails!  Although it's hard to keep him from rolling in the horse manure or horse pee - seriously, Leo LOVES him some horses).
I think next time it'll be appropriate to bring a lunch and hang out.
And I think Leo will be up for some hiking again, which is good.  Of course, getting away from the tick infestation means the 'daks.  Not that there's anything wrong with that!
