Camping!

Well, thanks to the efficacy of the Vincristine and years of collecting camping gear, I was able to take Leo camping to our spot in the Willowemoc Wild Forest this weekend. It was a lovely day and night for camping. Not too cold, not too warm, and not too crowded - well, at least not on Sunday night, in a primitive campsite.
Yes, it was Memorial Day weekend, so the camp sites would likely be full - or at least the good ones would. However, I surmised that most folks only like doing primitive car camping for 2 days. Usually, after that folks either want to be moving along to another camp site or want some creature comforts (toilets, showers, running water). My gamble was that by Sunday, people would be leaving, and that's what happened. We wound up with the primo camping spot.

Side note - We could have had the #2 primo camping spot, but it was over-run with packaged and bagged garbage - like, a LOT of it, like more than a few people for more than a few days. And it was all just left, in grocery bags. There was a LOT of food waste, too, which was a little disturbing, since the area does have scavengers. We got there around 3PM, so I assumed I'd be bagging someone's garbage to prevent a visit from Yogi and Boo-boo. A little while later, a older couple in a beat up old truck came by, make an enormous and somewhat impressive bonfire at the site, and burned it all. Everything - food, waste, bags, even a cooking pot. And then just left. Weird. To quote a guy at the mini-mart, "I don't know if it's legal, but everyone does it."

Anyway, Leo seemed pretty happy. He loves the tent, loves being outside, and loved the freedom he had when he could run around with nothing more than a 10-ft leash trailing behind him. He let us know whenever there was a car coming or people around, and settled down nicely by the fire at night. His spot at the foot of the tent was nice and comfy (I worried about him), and it got a little chilly - down in to the 40's. 2 of the three of us were nice and toasty.

There's something about camping that makes me have to go to the bathroom a lot. Like, I got up 4 times during the night. I never do that! Maybe it's the light sleeping, maybe it's the sound of the rushing water... whatever it is, it happens there all the time. The last time I got up I took Leo out with me and we went for a nice 4AM walk around - he was up, and had given a little warning snort. We didn't see anything, but at 4AM in the woods, there is NO light and my little flashlight, strong as it is, is just a little spot of light in a whole lotta dark. We came back to the tent and Leo was happy to curl up on the cool bare floor of the tent right next to me, and I fell into a sound sleep for the next 2 hours with my hand on his head. It was nice.

And he was up and ready to go at 6AM. Walks, coffee, breakfast, another walk, and then packing it up, and it was time to go. And it was a little sad driving out of there. I don't know if he'll be back up. Well, I know he'll be up there, but back up there like this.
